Chapter 19
September 25, 2015
“Which movie do you want to see, Everest or Black Mass?” Kyle asked, holding the taxi door open as they left one of their favorite restaurants. A date night had been Kyle’s idea, an effort to forget the bad news they’d received that day from one of the two prosecutors assigned to their case—the trial had been continued another sixty days, to December 1, and Parker Harris had agreed to a plea deal in exchange for his testimony. The one Kyle thought of as Geek Guy, with the thick-framed glasses, wouldn’t see the inside of a jail cell. At his arraignment, he’d pleaded guilty to simple assault and conspiracy charges, and had received probation, community service, and was banned from entering Boystown for the duration of his probation.
“The continuance was completely expected,” Logan Schultz, the prosecuting attorney, said over the phone that afternoon, his deep voice both soothing and commanding. “Defendants are guaranteed a speedy trial, though when defense council requests more time, it’s usually granted. Mainly I’m calling to discuss with you Parker Harris’s arraignment.”
Schultz was everything Kyle would have wanted in a prosecutor, even while he scared the shit out of both him and Jesse. Schultz was a bear of a man, pushing fifty and robust in stature. He had the build of a former athlete and the air of a man used to being listened to, and his salt-and-pepper hair gave him the authority that came with years of experience. Frankly, he was the kind of guy Kyle would have assumed to be a bully in his younger years. His assumptions had proved unfounded in the few conversations they’d had with Schultz, and Kyle was learning to trust the man who promised to do his damnedest to see those responsible for what happened to him and Jesse pay for their crimes. Both Schultz and his colleague, Judy Lamott, were veteran prosecutors, picked specifically because they were used to conducting cases with national scrutiny. Decades of experience between them had definitely helped Jesse and Kyle trust their case was in good hands, despite the difficulty ahead.
“I know you were intent on seeing all four of your attackers go to jail,” Schultz had gone on. “While I don’t want to push you into thinking of this in any way that makes you uncomfortable, Harris’s cooperation is a big bonus in this case.”
“I know,” Kyle said. “Harris didn’t throw any punches. He could have been as scared of his friends as we were, for all I know.” It made his chest ache to consider any kind of empathy for one of the four assailants, but the truth was, he’d had no idea what was going through the guy’s head that night. He had been the one to tell his friends they should leave. He’d agreed to help the prosecution. There was no way Kyle could think of him as a victim, too, but he didn’t think Parker Harris would have bothered them had he not been in the company of his brute friends.
